When you invest in a Ford, you expect dependability, durability, and performance. But even the toughest trucks and most efficient SUVs need consistent care to stay at their best. That’s where long-term maintenance and smart driving habits come in. Whether you’re cruising down Highway 64 or navigating the hills near Tims Ford Lake, your Ford should be up for the journey. At Russell Barnett Ford of Winchester, we’ve helped thousands of Tennessee drivers protect their investment — and we’re here to help you do the same with these tried and true vehicle performance tips.
This detailed guide is packed with expert insights, practical maintenance tips, and driving strategies to help you keep your vehicle running smoothly for years to come.
1. Follow the Maintenance Schedule
The most effective way to extend the life of your vehicle is by adhering to your Ford’s official maintenance plan. This routine typically includes:
- Oil and filter changes
- Brake system inspections
- Fluid top-offs and flushes
- Tire rotation and balancing
- Battery checks and replacements
Every Ford model comes with a recommended maintenance timeline in the owner’s manual. Following these guidelines not only preserves vehicle health — it also protects your warranty and prevents surprise repairs.
Tip: At Russell Barnett Ford of Winchester, our certified service techs track your maintenance history and send friendly reminders to help you stay on schedule.
2. Change the Engine Oil on Time
Clean oil is essential to engine performance. Over time, oil breaks down and collects contaminants that cause internal wear and tear. This is the most important out of all vehicle performance tips, and, unfortunately, one of the most commonly overlooked.
Best Practices:
- Use Ford-approved synthetic oil whenever possible.
- Change your oil every 3,000 to 7,500 miles, or as recommended by the manufacturer and depending on your driving habits.
- Check your oil level monthly — especially before long trips.
Neglecting oil changes can result in engine sludge, overheating, or even full failure. Quick oil services at our Winchester service department make it easy to stay on top of this critical maintenance.
3. Tire Care = Safety + Longevity
Proper tire care improves safety, fuel economy, and ride quality. It also extends the lifespan of your tires — which can be a major cost savings.
Tire Tips:
- Rotate tires every 6,000–8,000 miles.
- Maintain correct tire pressure (check monthly).
- Schedule a wheel alignment once a year or after hitting potholes.
Bonus: Our team can perform tire rotations during routine services — saving you time and money while extending tire life.
4. Don’t Skip Fluid Checks
Your Ford relies on multiple fluids beyond engine oil to operate safely and efficiently:
- Coolant: Prevents engine overheating
- Brake fluid: Ensures responsive braking
- Transmission fluid: Protects gear changes
- Power steering fluid: Aids steering control
- Windshield washer fluid: Keeps visibility clear
Dirty or low fluids lead to accelerated wear and costly repairs. Schedule a multi-point inspection at our Ford of Winchester service bay — we’ll check and top off all fluids for you.
5. Replace Filters Regularly
Air filters protect both your engine and your passengers from contaminants:
- Engine air filter: Replace every 15,000–30,000 miles.
- Cabin air filter: Replace every 12,000–15,000 miles.
- Environmental factors can reduce these recommended mileages!
A dirty engine filter reduces efficiency, while a clogged cabin filter impacts air quality inside the vehicle — especially during Tennessee’s pollen-heavy seasons.
6. Maintain Your Brakes
Brake components wear down over time, especially with stop-and-go driving or mountain descents.
Signs You Need Brake Service:
- Squeaking or grinding noises
- Vibration when braking
- Longer stopping distance
- Brake pedal feels “soft” or spongy
We recommend brake inspections every 10,000–15,000 miles, and we offer Motorcraft® brake components with expert installation.
7. Don’t Delay on Dashboard Alerts

Your dashboard warning lights serve a critical role in protecting your vehicle. They are a way for your vehicle to give you its own performance tips. If one illuminates, don’t ignore it — address it immediately.
Common lights include:
- Check engine
- Low tire pressure
- Brake warning
- Battery alert
Bring your vehicle to our Winchester service center — our diagnostic tools can quickly pinpoint the issue and recommend next steps.
8. Protect Your Transmission
Transmission repairs are among the most expensive — and most preventable — automotive issues.
To prolong the life of your transmission:
- Avoid towing loads heavier than your Ford’s rating
- Shift gears smoothly and don’t “ride” in neutral
- Have your transmission fluid flushed as recommended
Ask about extended service contracts for added peace of mind.
9. Keep the Battery in Good Shape

Extreme weather, short trips, and electrical drain can all shorten battery life. Fortunately, battery health is easy to manage.
Vehicle performance tips for a long-lasting battery:
- Test your battery at least once a year
- Clean corrosion from terminals
- Replace your battery every 3 years, or immediately after poor test results.
At Russell Barnett Ford of Winchester, we offer free battery testing and carry high-quality Motorcraft® batteries in stock.
10. Don’t Forget to Wash and Wax
Rust and paint damage are often caused by neglecting your car’s exterior. Regular washing removes harmful road debris, while waxing protects against UV damage and oxidation.
We recommend:
- Washing your vehicle every 2–3 weeks
- Waxing 3–4 times a year
- Cleaning the undercarriage after winter or muddy off-road adventures
A clean vehicle not only looks better — it lasts longer, too.
11. Adjust Driving Habits
Your driving style directly impacts wear and tear on your vehicle’s components. Practice smooth, steady driving to reduce strain on your engine, transmission, and brakes.
Smart driving habits:
- Avoid aggressive acceleration and sudden braking
- Don’t speed through curves or over potholes
- Limit unnecessary idling, especially in cold weather
Smooth driving = longer lifespan for your vehicle’s most expensive systems.
12. Avoid Overloading
Every Ford comes with a maximum payload and towing capacity. Exceeding these limits can stress the frame, suspension, and powertrain.
Before loading up for your next road trip or outdoor adventure:
- Check your Ford’s load limits in the owner’s manual
- Distribute weight evenly
- Use Ford-approved towing accessories
Our team can help you prep your vehicle for safe, legal, and efficient towing.
13. Use Certified Technicians and OEM Parts

When it’s time for service or repairs, choosing a Ford-certified technician ensures your vehicle is cared for by experts who know it best.
We only use genuine Ford OEM parts — the same ones your vehicle was built with. This guarantees a perfect fit, optimal performance, and long-lasting reliability.
14. Keep a Maintenance Log
Keeping track of your service history helps ensure nothing gets missed — and increases resale value if you ever decide to sell or trade.
We recommend documenting:
- Oil changes
- Brake services
- Tire rotations
- Filter replacements
- Battery installations
Ask our team about digital service records for quick and convenient access anytime.
15. Schedule Multi-Point Inspections
Want a full overview of your vehicle’s condition? Ask for a complimentary multi-point inspection with your next service visit.
We’ll inspect:
- Suspension and steering
- Tire tread and pressure
- Brake system
- Battery strength
- Fluid levels and leaks
- Belts and hoses
It’s one of the easiest ways to stay proactive with your maintenance.
Seasonal Maintenance in Winchester, TN
Winchester’s weather shifts call for season-specific vehicle care. Here’s what to focus on throughout the year:

- Clean undercarriage to remove winter grime

Memorial Day: A Time to Honor and Reflect

Each year, as the final Monday in May draws near, Americans pause to take part in one of our nation’s most sacred traditions: Memorial Day. More than just a long weekend or the gateway to summer, this sacred day is a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to our country.
A Quiet Beginning with a Powerful Purpose
Memorial Day began not with celebration, but with reverence. In the years following the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other, communities across the country came together to honor their fallen. They laid flowers, offered prayers, and stood in silence at the graves of soldiers who had given everything.
In 1868, this growing tradition was formalized when General John A. Logan declared May 30 as “Decoration Day,” a time for the nation to remember its Civil War dead. Over time, as the United States faced new conflicts and lost more of its sons and daughters to war, the day expanded to honor all military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice. In 1971, Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday, observed on the last Monday of May.
More Than a Day Off
Though Memorial Day often brings the sounds of laughter, cookouts, and summer sunshine; at its heart, it’s a day of remembrance. It’s a time to honor the courage, sacrifice, and love of country that led so many to give their lives in defense of freedom.
For many families, this is a deeply personal day, a time to visit gravesites, share stories, or simply sit in quiet remembrance. Across the country, flags are lowered to half-staff, flowers are placed with trembling hands, and prayers are whispered through tears.
The Traditions That Carry the Meaning Forward
Memorial Day is marked by timeless traditions that keep its meaning alive:
- Cemetery Visits: Families visit the final resting places of loved ones, decorating graves with flags, flowers, and personal tokens of remembrance.
- The National Moment of Remembrance: At 3 p.m. local time, Americans pause for one minute of silence to honor those who gave their lives. It’s a moment of unity, and an entire nation holding its breath in collective gratitude.
- Parades and Ceremonies: Many communities host Memorial Day parades, featuring veterans, military members, and patriotic tributes that celebrate and remember those who served.
- Flag Etiquette: From sunrise to noon, the American flag is flown at half-staff, symbolizing mourning. At noon, it’s raised to full-staff, signifying the resilience of those left behind and our commitment to uphold the values the fallen fought for.
Memorial Day in Today’s America
While our world has changed over the decades, the importance of Memorial Day remains. Whether through a social media tribute, a quiet moment alone, or a child placing a handmade card at a headstone, the spirit of remembrance endures.
Teachers tell stories of heroes in classrooms. Veterans share memories of those they served beside. And families pass down the legacy of loved ones who gave everything so that others might live in peace and freedom.
Holding on to What Matters
It’s easy to lose sight of Memorial Day’s purpose amidst the sales, the travel plans, and the start-of-summer buzz. But even amid the fun, there is space for gratitude and honoring those who never came home.
Take a moment this Memorial Day to look at the flag differently, to pause and reflect on the cost of the freedoms we enjoy. Speak the names of the fallen. Thank a veteran or a military family. Attend a local remembrance event or simply offer a moment of silence. Because at its core, Memorial Day isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a sacred reminder that freedom is never free, and that behind every flag waving in the breeze is a life remembered, a story honored, and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.
THE 2025 FORD MAVERICK

This year, the Maverick lineup welcomes the performance-focused Lobo trim. It features a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Lobo is equipped with a lowered suspension, upgraded brakes, and distinct styling elements, including 19-inch rally-inspired wheels.
For 2025, the rest of the Maverick lineup undergoes a styling refresh, incorporating darkened headlamp covers, a redesigned front bumper and grille, and new wheel designs. The interior enhancements include new trim color options, such as the available Smoke Truffle theme on the Lariat trim, which boasts bronze-colored accents. A larger 13.2-inch infotainment display is introduced, replacing last year’s 8.0-inch screen, and now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The hybrid powertrain now offers all-wheel drive and can tow up to 4000 pounds with the Towing package. A 360-degree camera and a feature that assists with trailer hitching using the rear camera system are newly available.
Ford has also expanded the standard driver-assistance tech, adding lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlamps. The Lariat and Tremor models feature a more advanced adaptive cruise control system that includes lane-centering and speed-limit sign recognition.
Interior

The Maverick comes exclusively as a crew cab, featuring four doors and a rear seat that offers sufficient but not ample space. Ford has cleverly included numerous storage compartments and bins throughout the interior, with sizable storage areas located under the rear seats. While the base models are not luxurious, they do come with standard amenities such as a tilting and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, and adjustable lumbar support for the front seats. The XLT and Lariat trims provide additional features, either as standard or through optional packages, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, and power-adjustable front seats. According to Ford, the Maverick’s 4.5-foot bed is capable of accommodating up to 18 sheets of four-by-eight-foot three-quarter-inch plywood without the need to angle them. The bed also includes a 12-volt power outlet, with an optional 110-volt outlet available.
Performance

The Maverick’s standard engine is a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a total of 191 horsepower. This setup is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). For those seeking more power, there’s an optional 250-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive comes standard with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is available as an option for the hybrid, which has front-wheel drive as its default configuration. The Maverick’s suspension is designed to support its impressive payload capacity, resulting in a relatively firm ride, particularly noticeable on uneven surfaces. When driving the 2025 Maverick, you’ll find that the hybrid model maintains its previous driving characteristics, while the Lobo offers a more spirited handling experience, cornering impressively for a truck.
Towing

Enhance your towing capabilities to haul up to 4,000 pounds with the optional 4K Tow Package. This package comes with additional features such as a Class III 2-inch receiver trailer hitch, 4-pin and 7-pin connectors, a trailer brake controller, an upgraded cooling fan, and, for models equipped with EcoBoost, a higher capacity radiator.
The innovative Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system utilizes the rear camera and corner radar to assist in aligning your truck for hitching. The 13.2-inch center touchscreen displays guidelines to aid in this process.
Pro Trailer Backup Assist simplifies reversing by allowing you to control the direction of the trailer with a knob. After entering a few measurements and calibrating the trailer, just turn the knob in your desired direction, and the system will manage the steering wheel for you.
